Technology class builds cabinet for fire department

April, 2011

In March, members of the Canajoharie Volunteer Fire Department asked Canajoharie High School technology teacher Dwayne Heroth if his class could build them a cabinet. He obliged. About six students from grades 9-12 worked on it and even created their own moldings. Technology class builds cabinet for fire department

On April 7, members of the department picked up the cabinet, which they plan to use as an entertainment center. The 5-foot long, 44-inch tall cabinet is made of plywood and features a glass front. Before the department took the cabinet, students installed a plaque stating who built it.

"The department approached me about an entertainment center and came in with a simple drawing," Mr. Heroth said. "They brought the materials to us and we had to manufacture it.

"The students learned a lot. They learned cutting, fitting, and joining pieces together."

Sophomore Chris Pawlaczyk said he learned "a ton" by working on the project. "All of us in this class have become a family and I love coming in here and working on projects like this. I know how to use every machine in the shop," he said.

Junior Dom Mazzarella said the group worked hard to achieve its goal of building the cabinet. And he's proud of that. "We're like a big family when we do this," he said.
