“I want you to put a lot of effort into these because these people are really doing us a service.”
That’s what social studies teacher Phil Schoff told his ninth grade students at Canajoharie High School early Monday morning on Dec. 6, as they prepared to make holiday cards for service men and women around the world.
Mr. Schoff planned to have all of his classes make cards on Monday. Each student made about three, so when the day was done, he had about 250. His next step will be to send the cards to the American Red Cross for distributions to service members overseas, in the U.S., and in training. It’s all part of the Holiday Mail for Heroes program from the Red Cross. Christmas Card
The students were “100 percent” behind the idea,
Mr. Schoff said. He said it’s nice to bring history to life because
the class often studies about soldiers and war. He added that it’s
also important because the local community has connections to
service members.
“Just the idea of them serving and us over here enjoying our lives
and freedom is humbling,” he said.
