The U.S. House of Representatives just passed the
Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act on Dec. 2. The move coincidentally
coincides with the Canajoharie school district examining its school
lunch program.
The measure will dramatically improve children's access to
nutritious meals, enhance the quality of meals children eat both in
and out of school and in child care settings, implement new school
food safety guidelines and, for the first time, establish nutrition
standards for all foods sold in schools.
On the local level, district officials formed the Canajoharie
Cafeteria Advisory Committee this year with a focus on avoiding
repetition in the cafeteria and introducing students to new and
healthy eating habits.
“We’re very excited the government has taken the lead on an issue
that is very important to us,” said Superintendent Richard Rose. “We
formed our committee because we not only want to enhance our school
lunch but we want begin healthy habits with our students that will
hopefully transition into healthy lifestyles.”
