Students decorate new teen space at Canajoharie Library

May, 2011

During April break, students from Canajoharie middle and high school gathered at theTeen space Canajoharie Public Library to lend a hand decorating the new Teen Space. Working with the library, students helped in the planning of this new space and got messy giving the library an extreme makeover, said Leah LaFera, head of library services at the Canajoharie Library and Arkell Museum.

According the library, the creative group of volunteers pulled off some amazing feats in just one day.

"Funky floor pillows and shimmering purple dividing curtains were sewn with the help of local artist Andre Jones. The brightly colored paper lanterns that hang from the ceiling give the space whimsy and give it a different feel than the rest of the library," a press release said. "Perhaps the most interesting addition to the space is the magnetic poetry door. What fun we had splatter painting the library and we only managed to get a little paint on the books. We even wrote and made our own magnetic poetry for the splatter door where t(w)eens can leave nonsensical poems for others to read."

Leah LaFera said this new space gives the library's teen and tween readers a place all there own in the library. “Teens can read in a comfy beanbag chair, check-out some new books and magazines, or play a board game with friends. The Teen Space has breathed new life into the library," she said.

The Teen Space features new books for teens from authors like Sarah Dessen, Stephanie Meyer, and Suzanne Collins. There are also new Manga, comic books, magazines, and audiobooks added every single week. We hope to see you in the library soon to check-out the brilliant work of our Canajoharie Central School student volunteers.

If you're interested in volunteering at the library, you can apply for the new summer Volunteer Program.
