Lauren Balfe, a sophomore at Canajoharie High School, has been selected by her teachers to attend a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar in June at a college in Albany.
“The faculty had to nominate someone based on leadership skills and the votes for her and her leadership qualities were overwhelming,” said director of school counseling Douglas Morrissey. “She is an outstanding student.”
According to the website, HOBY programs provide youth selected by their schools to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences.
Lauren said the nomination surprised her, but she’s excited to experience the seminar. She defines her leadership style as “considerate” and “cooperative” and thinks those qualities helped her be elected class president.
“I think I’m also easy to get along with,” she
said. “I’m looking forward to the seminar so I can learn new things
and meet new people.”
