Meet Nick Anker

Sept. 23, 2011

Canajoharie’s new vocal music teacher Nick Anker said it didn’t take long for him to notice the talent and dedication of his students. He calls them “cooperative and motivated” and says he’s proud to be a part of the staff. Teacher Nick Anker

Mr. Anker – a native of the Buffalo area – comes to Canajoharie with seven years of experience. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from the College of St. Rose and his master’s from SUNY Fredonia.

In Canajoharie, he’ll teach 7th and 8th grade choir, 8th grade general music, chamber choir (grades 9-12), and the high school choir. He’ll also give voice lessons throughout the day.

Mr. Anker said he’s happy to be a part of the district’s already strong music program.

“I am just very impressed with the level of musicianship of the students. They are deeply talented and have a warm and beautiful sound,” he said. “And they’re very easy to teach, too.”

Mr. Anker says he understands many of his students’ passion for music, because he shares it.

He grew-up singing and performing in high school and had solos at New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) events. He voice trained for about 16 years in classical and opera singing and helped form an A cappella group. And in his free time, he’s a DJ.

“I’ve always loved music. It’s so expressive, and everyone usually loves it. It’s always there, and it’s so emotional and touches the soul,” he said.

Mr. Anker also has a music technology background and says he’d like to teach that during a future class. During his career, he’s taught students on a digital workstation where they’ve utilized computer software to compose, arrange, play, or print music.

If there’s anything he wants students and parents to know is that he’s approachable and always looking for new singers.

“I like to have fun with the students and want them to always feel comfortable and safe. “No one is going to beat them up for making a mistake,” he said.

“You don’t need to be a good singer to do good singing. Every voice is valued and important. You don’t need to be a solo superstar.”
