High School senior and Eagle Scout Dante Binotto III was awarded the
BSA Medal of Honor on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
The BSA Medal of Honor is a National award given for lifesaving and meritorious acts based on outstanding and unusual acts that demonstrate unusual heroism, skill or bravery and reflect Scouting ideals.
Scoutmaster and Canajoharie Middle School teacher Dr. Gregory Pitonza said Dante lives up to the Scout Oath and Law in scouting, school and the community.
“Dante exemplified the Scout Motto (Be Prepared) by assessing the situation and putting his skills to use. During the rescue, Dante responded quickly, used his judgment, acted and provided the calm presence necessary in such a situation,” he said.
Dante earned the medal for helping to save Larry Washington, who was pinned under a tractor. Dante and David Williams – who were both working for Washington - saw that Washington was stuck between the tractor tire and a road sign. Dante bent the sign back making space to remove Washington and then gave instructions to Williams to move the tractor. Dante provided first aid and kept Washington calm until an ambulance arrived.
Dante has been a member of Canajoharie, Troop 81 for the past seven years. He was one of two scouts who earned the Eagle Scout Award this past year based on leadership, scout spirit, participation, and completion of his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project. His experience through the ranks of Scout to Eagle has given him knowledge and skills that were put to use during the rescue.
Dante is also a member of the Varsity Football, Basketball and Track teams. His future plans include college where he will study marine biology.
