Canajoharie inducts first member into Hall of Fame

During Canajoharie High School's 138th Annual Commencement Ceremony Saturday, June 24 the inaugural inductee into the newGen. MacFarland Canajoharie Alumni Hall of Fame was introduced.

Each year the school plans to induct a notable alumni into the Hall of Fame. The first inductee was Lt. Gen. Sean MacFarland, a 1977 Canajoharie alumni and West Point graduate, who is now the commander of Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led, 60-nation coalition against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL.

He is perhaps best known for his efforts as a colonel to secure the city of Ramadi in 2006 and foster the Sunni Awakening. In 2014, Gen. MacFarland was assigned as the commanding general of 3rd Corps at Ford Hood, Texas, a position he holds concurrently with  the command of Operation Inherent Resolve. Most recently, the general was named among the 100 Most Influential People in Time magazine. Senator John McCain nominated Gen. MacFarland for the Time article.

The Hall of Fame honor was a surprise for the general, who is currently overseas. The honor was accepted on the general's behalf by his neice, Alicia, a 2012 CHS graduate, with other family members in attendance.

"Had he been here in person he would say that the credit of his success should go to every soldier, marine, airman, and sailor that have served with him and taken the vow to protect, honor and serve our country every single day," his niece said.
