Canajoharie PTA Minutes—February 14, 2006

  1. Greetings
    1. Co-President, Melissa Balk, called the meeting to order at 7 pm with fourteen members in attendance. The pledge was recited. Brief introductions were given by each member.
  2. Secretary’s Report
    1. The secretary’s report was read and accepted.
  3. Treasurer’s Report
    1. The updated Treasurer’s report was reviewed with updates and accepted.
  4. 1000 Book Kick-Off: Kathy Dopp reviewed the 1,000 Books Program which is scheduled to start next week. She has over 200 books received for Scholastic or personal donations. Each color coded bag will be put at the specific locations with sign out sheets and basic reader information sheets. There are five Day Care sites so far participating in the program. The extra bags will be kept at the Canajoharie Library. If anyone has any questions regarding this program please contact Kathy Dopp.
  5. Old Business
    1. Membership: Tara reported we currently have 177 members.
    2. Box Tops: Mrs. Monk reported the next installment of box tops will be sent in by February 28th. The check for those should be received sometime in April.
    3. Movie Night: The next scheduled movie night is March 24th. The past movie nights have been successful. This movie night will also be part of the end of the PARP program.
    4. Katrina Update: Melissa read an e-mail she received from BOCES regarding this program to donate 10,000 books to Katrina victims. At the end of January they had 7,975 books and plan to meet their goal by May 31st. They have volunteers from local schools to drive the books to the destination.
  6. New Business
    1. Thank you cards: Melissa read thank you cards received from the spelling bee committee for prize donations and from Ms. Wolgemuth and Mrs. DeJung for enrichment monies they received.
    2. PARP: The PARP committee had met on February 14th at 6:30 to review their program. Tara reviewed the schedule of activities for the two week program. Detailed information on this program will be sent home with students. Tracy had contacted Scholastic regarding sponsorship of books for this program and they did not have anything available. Bronwyn made a request for the PTA to pay for a book for each child in Pre-K thru Fifth Grade for this program. The approximate cost would be $1,000. The requested was accepted.
    3. Enrichment Committee: The enrichment committee met on February 14, 2006 to review requests they had received. Four requests from High School teachers were reviewed and all were approved. This committee is scheduled to meet again on April 11th at 6:30pm.
    4. Fundraising Info Update: Melissa reported she had been receiving information on various fundraisers. The PTA is scheduled to do a fundraiser in the 2006-2007 school year and we will review this topic later this year.
    5. PARP: This committee met on January 11, 2006 at 6:30 pm. The PARP program will run from March 13th thru March 24th. The reading goal for students will be 15 minutes per day. There will be a different theme each day of the week. Monday will be “mellow Monday” which will consist of free reading time. Tuesday will be a riddle over the morning announcements and each class will take a guess at the riddle. The winning class will win a book. Wednesday will be dress as your favorite book character. Thursday will be “Thoughtful Thursday” with different assignments handed out for the weekend such as creating a bumper sticker and a campaign button. Friday will be “fun Friday”. The committee would like to give each student who participates a book at the end of the program. Tracy will contact Scholastic to find out if they would sponsor the PARP program.
    6. Misc Items: Mrs. Nyahay reported she had received a request for $75 for a pair of glasses for a student. She requested $75 from the student health fund for the glasses. The request was approved.
  7. The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 pm. The next meeting is scheduled for March 14, 2006.
