Canajoharie PTA Minutes—April 3, 2007

  1. Greetings
    1. President, Melissa Balk, called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm with twelve members in attendance. The pledge was recited.
  2. Secretary’s Report
    1. Secretary, Tracy Mead, read the secretary’s report from the last meeting. Mary Monk made a motion to accept the minutes with Scott Tyler seconding the motion. All were in favor.
  3. Treasurer’s Report
    1. Treasurer, Ellen Welch, reviewed the treasurer’s report with updates. Mary Monk made a motion to accept the report with Scott Tyler seconding the motion. All were in favor.
  4. Correspondence
    1. Thank you’s were received from Mrs. Kolodzeij and Mr. Vachon for the PTA support they received. Thank you’s were also received from elementary students for the PARP program.
  5. Old Business
    1. Purchase of Television for Middle School: Melissa reported the television for the middle school had arrived and should be installed in the next week. Melissa will get a picture of the television after it is set up for the school website.
    2. Enrichment Committee Report: The enrichment committee met at 6:00 on April 3rd and two requests were approved. There were two revisions made to the enrichment committee guidelines. The first is teachers can only make one request per school year but administrators may submit requests at any time. The second revision is any request over $500 must be submitted to the committee by the October meeting. This was the last meeting of the enrichment committee for this school year.
    3. PARP Program: Melissa thanked Tara Mason for her hard work with the successful PARP Program again this year.
    4. NYS Consumer Protection Board: The presentation from the NYS Consumer Protection Board on identity theft scheduled for April 18, 2007 had been cancelled until further notice due to staffing changes at the state.
  6. New Business:
    1. Request for Funds: There were several requests for PTA funds. The Middle School yearbook committee requested $1,000. Kathy Dopp made a motion to grant the request with Tina Hopler seconding the motion. All were in favor. There was a request from Mr. Pitonza for PTA funds for the upcoming Recyclable Regatta. Kathy Dopp made a motion to grant the request with Ellen Welch seconding the motion. All were in favor. There was a request for $110 for the Sister-to-Sister summit. Mary Monk made a motion to grant the request with Tracy Mead seconding the motion. All were in favor. There was a request from Chris Ward who will be participating in the AFS program. The cost of the 6-week trip to Costa Rica is $6,000. After some discussion it was decided to decline this request. Melissa will contact Chris Ward to discuss other possible funding sources such as the Arkel Foundation or the Community Chest. The last request for funds was from Dr. Bowden on behalf of Mrs. Hammons in the amount of $1,000 for the SADD post prom party. Kathy Dopp made a motion to grant the request with Mary Monk seconding the motion. All were in favor.
    2. PTA Officers 2007-2008: There will be a vote at the next PTA meeting for the 2007-2008 PTA officers. Currently up for nomination are Mary Monk for President, Ellen Welch for Treasurer and Tracy Mead for Secretary. At this time there were no nominations for Vice President.
    3. Kindergarten Registration: Kindergarten registration is scheduled for April 25th, 26th and 27th. Melissa will be setting up the display for the PTA for those dates with handouts and video.
    4. Teacher Appreciation Day: Teacher Appreciation Day is May 8th. Tina Hopler volunteered to pick up the bagels and juice for the teachers and deliver them to the schools. Tina will also pass out the calendars in the teacher’s mailboxes.
    5. Other Items
      1. Kathy Dopp needed ideas for giving away the many books collected from the Books In a Bag Program. After some discussion it was decided to have books available at the Kindergarten screening to give to parents and also to have books available at the book bag give away in August.
      2. Bronwyn McCaffrey, who is the Regional Membership chair reported Canajoharie is fourth in the Mohawk Valley for membership. Bronwyn requested information from Tara Mason, Canajoharie PTA membership chairperson, for awards she will apply for to the region for membership.
  7. The meeting was adjourned at 7:35 pm. The next meeting is scheduled for May 8th at 7pm.
