Students,
teachers and staff take a big step toward health
Can the students and adults at East Hill walk to
Los Angeles in 23 days? The students, teachers, and staff people
at East Hill School are about to find out!
On March 17th, the school kicked off "Walk
Across America," a joint effort by the Canajoharie School
Wellness Committee and MVP Healthcare to place everyone on a
path to good health.
Using
pedometers generously donated by MVP Healthcare, everybody is
recording their steps. Third graders Michael Weaver and Amy
Reedy created a database and are carefully recording the
school's progress. By April 9th, the collective steps that
everyone walks will hopefully exceed 2769 miles—the distance
from Canajoharie to LA.
Each day, students monitor the group's progress
and learn about cities, states and geography as well as counting
and reading numbers. The real goal is to promote a healthy
lifestyle that includes a habit of physical activity.
Special
guest MVP Big Apple joined Gary Hughes of MVP Public Relations
to help make the kick-off a true event. Big Apple visited with
delighted students at lunch time, giving high fives and
accepting hugs. Principal Virginia Nyahay organized the walk and
has promised a celebration at the end.
"Walk Across America" is another school effort
to teach both children and adults the importance of good
nutrition, routine exercise, and regular medical care to remain
healthy.
