Fifth graders learn about Chinese tangram puzzles

Fifth grade students from Joan Kolodziej's fifth grade class at East Hill Elementary Schooll recently worked on Chinese tangram puzzles. The puzzles, which aid in developing spatial pattern recognition, have been used by students for centuries. (full story)

Fifth graders investigate ancient writing system

Fifth grade students from Joan Kolodziej's fifth grade class at East Hill Elementary School have been learning about the ancient Mayan civilizations, using books, articles, and videos. The group recently used a fast-drying clay to recreate Mayan hieroglyphic, or glyphs, featuring logograms (specific meanings) and syllabograms (particular sounds). (full story)

Fifth grade students sponsor clothing drive in December

The fifth grade students at Harry Hoag Elementary School sponsored a hat, mitten, gloves, and scarf drive in December and collected more than six boxes of items. (full story)

Two openings remain in afternoon Pre-K program

If you're a parent of a four-year-old child and would like to enroll your child in the afternoon Pre-K program at East Hill Elementary, please contact Sherri Hodge in the East Hill office at 518-673-6310. The program runs from runs from noon to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

East Hill Elementary teacher awarded Target grant for museum field trip

The entire fifth grade class at East Hill Elementary School will visit the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown in April thanks to a Target Field trip grant awarded to teacher Joan Kolodziej. She calls the trip a "Native American sampler," because the students will see the Thaw Collection of American Indian Art, real Native American artifacts, and a bark house. (full story)
