Quilt Tells A Story
Some fifth grade students at East Hill School in
Canajoharie recently completed a fabric paint quilt depicting
many important objects found in THE CAY, the first novel the
students read this year. Each fabric square was sketched first
and then painted with fabric paint.
Cheyenne Rockwell contributed a drawing of Stew
Cat, the cook's cat and a likeness of Phillip Enright, the main
character of the story, at the moment he realizes he's gone
blind. Brice Buccolo painted a ship called the Empire Tern as it
begins to sink following being attacked by the German navy
during World War II. Samantha Cook contributed two separate palm
trees, one showed flora of the island on which the characters
were stranded and the other depicted Phillip climbing the
coconut palm to seize the "outrageous" coconuts.
Once the squares had all dried, Mrs. Kolodziej
took them home and her mother Mrs. Millie Slavis, sewed them
onto green material backing.
