Nature
& art combine for magnificent photography
Middle school art teacher Michelle Egelston gave her
students a free hand as they headed outdoors to create their
own works of art using natural media and a digital camera.
The exercise was part of a study of Andy Goldsworthy, a
British sculptor who commonly uses his hands, teeth, and
found tools to to prepare and arrange materials like twigs,
thorns, stone, mud, snow, icicles, brightly colored flowers,
pinecones, and leaves into unique site specific works.

the coloring book is completed, the student chooses an
elementary class to present their books to. Many themes such
as "Healthy Habits", "Bike Safety", "Stranger Danger",
"Exercise and You", "Dental Care" and "Trick or Treat Safety
Tips" have been created so far.

7th grade rock pumpkins and
coloring pages brighten elementary school days
According to the middle
school's CHIPS program - Character Helps Improve Personal
Success. Part of developing positive character traits is
learning to work with and to help others. In October, Mrs.
Dingman's homebase painted rock pumpkins and delivered them
to eager elementary students. The two groups spent some
additional time working on coloring pages that the middle
schoolers had also brought.
Will
school close tomorrow? Ask meteorologist Steve LaPointe!
(Spring 2007) 8th graders had
the opportunity to learn about weather from one of the
region's leading meteorologists, CBS 6 meteorologist Steve
LaPointe. LaPointe spent the morning of Thursday, March 8
sharing his knowledge of global warming and meteorology with an
eager audience.
LaPointe explained that meteorology is one of the
fastest growing sciences. Data used to forecast our weather
grows exponentially each year. Crunching that data with powerful
computers and adding the observations of local weather spotters
enables today's forecasters to generate highly detailed computer models to predict the
weather. Advanced computer graphics, doppler radar and new
production techniques even change the way weather is presented
on the television broadcast. (full

Leading by example—6th grader
spearheads food drive
(Spring 2006) Ask 6th grader Gabriel Cirtwell
how to serve the community and he will tell you—from
personal experience. At just 11 years old, he has already
demonstrated compassion for others and a commitment to help
that most adults cannot match. And if you think this is
simply hype, ask his middle school principal, Rodney Strait.
