Five Canajoharie Odyssey of the Mind teams competed at Fonda-Fultonville Central School on March 11, 2018.
“We were lucky not to be snowed out,” said district OM coordinator Doris Leverett. “We had two major snow storms in the week before the Region 21 tournament. The teams had been working since November for this exciting day. They did a great job and had a lot of fun, too.”
Odyssey of the Mind is a creative competition requiring teamwork. Teams consist of five to seven students in three age divisions: elementary, middle and high school. The rules for solving each problem are the same for all teams competing around the world.
The district had an elementary and middle school team each participate in Problem 3 “Mockumentary! Seriously?”
The elementary team created a mockumentary of “Peter Pan.” Team members were Evangeline Compton, Giavanna Fatta, Avery Fichthorn, Christopher Frederick, Xavier Fruehstorfer, Gavin Sincavage and Hayden Yerdon.
The middle school team’s mockumentary was based on “Anne of Green Gables.” They earned a second place trophy. Team members were Vincenzo DeCrescenzo, Grayson Lapi, Eden Robinson, Sam Robinson, Madeline Sincavage, Soren Veit-Scott and Alexis Wadsworth.
Problem 5 teams, “Stellar Hangout” represented Canajoharie in all three divisions. Each team created characters that enjoyed an outer-space place with entertainment, unique food and odd creatures. The elementary team members were Rebecka Angus, Rieley Downs, Noah Ehle, Parker Forrest, Alexandria Gyurik, and Haley Smith. They placed third.
The middle school team members were Angelo Fatta, Ava Fatta, Lyracey Fowler-Johnston, Morgan Haviland, Janet Hernandez and Dawson Sweet.
The high school team members were Jane Cook, Natalia Downs, Kaylee Haig, Chelsea Snyder, Krystina Starr, and Patrick Wolfkiel. They placed third.
