East Hill student honored for poster design

East Hill Elementary fourth-grader Alexandria Gyurik was recognized in a ceremony in Herkimer on Saturday, April 29, with an honorable mention prize for her design in a contest sponsored by Gems Along the Mohawk to mark the bicentennial of the Erie Canal.

Fourth-grade students from 25 school districts in the Mohawk Valley region were invited to submit creative works in response to the theme “Dreams and Hard Work: Learning From the Erie Canal’s Success.”

Alexandria created an informational poster displaying photographs and facts about the history of the Erie Canal. She received a $25 prize as one of four honorable mentions. According to Gems Along the Mohawk, more than 200 people attended the celebration on April 29 to recognize the students who participated in the contest.

Alexandria is a student in Mrs. Leverett’s fourth-grade class at East Hill.
