The Canajoharie Central School District Parent Teacher Association kicked off its “Pick A Reading Partner” (PARP) program at East Hill Elementary on April 10.
PARP is a program of the state PTA that encourages reading at home to foster a love of reading among children.
To kick off PARP at East Hill, school librarian Audrey Maldonado was joined by Canajoharie Library librarian Hanna Conbeer. The two visited each elementary classroom to distribute library card applications and discuss PARP.
Students are encouraged to read with an adult every night and mark their reading time in their log. The library is also hosting “Booking Buddies,” where students can drop in between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays through May 10 to pick a book to read to a Beanie Baby “buddy” to count toward their PARP time. Snacks will be provided.
Students who return their reading logs will be invited to a PARP Celebration dinner on May 16, and will receive a ticket for a prize raffle.
Author James Preller will visit the school on April 12, and students will have the opportunity to purchase signed copies of his book.
The book exchange is back this year as well — students can bring in a book and trade it in for a new one. Books will be stored in the main lobby.
