CANAJOHARIE, N.Y. — Canajoharie Central School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nick Fitzgerald has announced his plans to retire in February 2027, concluding a distinguished 30-year career in public education. Dr. Fitzgerald has led the district since July 2019, following a dedicated career as a teacher, coach, Director of Athletics, Principal, and Superintendent.
“When you become a Superintendent of Schools, you hold a vision of what that role will look like,” said Dr. Fitzgerald. “My time at Canajoharie CSD exceeded every aspect of that vision. In a field that is frequently demanding and complex, our outstanding faculty, staff, students, Board of Education, administrative team, and surrounding community transformed the job into a remarkable privilege. Canajoharie is a unique and special district, and I offer my deepest thanks to everyone for making my tenure so fulfilling.”
During his eight years with the district, Dr. Fitzgerald oversaw significant academic, financial, and infrastructural growth while guiding Canajoharie through the COVID-19 pandemic. Key achievements during his tenure include:
Academic Distinction: Reached a school-record 94.5% graduation rate, maintaining a 93.75% three-year average, alongside significant performance gains in Grades 3–8 ELA and Math assessment scores.
Expanded Opportunities: Introduced high school academies and expanded extracurricular programming to enhance student opportunities.
Fiscal Responsibility & Funding: Passed every district budget under the state tax cap, secured $2.5 million in grants for programming, equipment, and capital improvements, and gained voter approval for $50 million in capital projects at no additional cost to taxpayers.
Technological Innovation: Earned recognition for the district as a designated Google Reference District.
“We really appreciate and value Dr. Fitzgerald’s contributions to our district. He has made a huge difference in our ability to prepare our students for living and working in the 21st Century,” said Board of Education President Mark Brody. “We’re very sad to see him go, but we wish him well in his future endeavors.”
